APPETIZER : a small, usually tasty sampling of food taken to whet the appetite

Italian: antipasto from anti- (from Latin ante- ‘before’) + pasto ‘food’, from Latin pastus

Chinese: dim sum – literally ‘touch the heart’

French: hors d’oeuvre literally ‘outside of the work’; appetizers were usually served apart (or ‘outside’) from the main course of a dinner

Turkish: meze –  literally ‘appetizer’, from Persian maza ‘to relish’

Spanish: tapas  tapa, literally ‘cover, lid’
