Olympia : Faster – Higher – Stronger

February 23, 2014 by quirkyowl

Olympic motto:

Latin: Citius – Altius – Fortius

In ancient Greece, games were held in Olympia every four years in honor of Zeus, the supreme deity and god of the sky. To the ancient Greeks, fire was considered to have sacred qualities. Months prior to the official opening ceremony of the Olympic games the Olympic torch is ignited in Olympia, Greece, and the flame continues to burn throughout the Games, until the day of the closing ceremonies, when it is finally extinguished. Today the flame symbolizes the connection between the games of ancient and modern times.
